How absurd men are! They never use the liberties they have, they demand those they do not have.
They have freedom of thought, they demand freedom of speech.

Thou Art the Way

The prayer book that our family is currently using included this evening the hymn "Thou Art the Way" by George Washington Doane (who was born the same year our first president died, thus his name). I was drawn to it because it is structured by John 14:6,"I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." I don't remember ever hearing it before, but I like it.

Thou art the Way: to Thee alone
From sin and death we flee;
And he who would the Father seek
Must seek Him, Lord, by Thee.

Thou art the Truth: Thy Word alone
True wisdom can impart;
Thou only canst inform the mind,
And purify the heart.

Thou art the Life: the rending tomb
Proclaims Thy conquering arm,
And those who put their trust in Thee
Nor death nor hell shall harm.

Thou art the Way, the Truth, the Life;
Grant us that Way to know,
That Truth to keep, that Life to win,
Whose joys eternal flow.
